Harnaam Kaur is a British model, anti-bullying activist, body positive activist, life coach, and motivational speaker who lives in London, UK. She possesses a very unique feature: an amazing beard. She was born with polycystic ovarian syndrome—a condition that can cause diabetes, alopecia and facial hair growth.
Although she is proud of how she looks now, Kaur’s journey to authentic self-acceptance was not easy. Along the way, she overcame bullying, suicide attempts and her own self doubt to become the person she is today.
While Kaur initially attempted to remove her facial hair due to constant bullying from others, she has grown to embrace her unconventional appearance and has become a spokesperson for the body positive movement. In an interview with Rock N Roll Bride, Kaur reflects on her decision to keep her beard:
“I decided to keep my beard and step forward against society’s expectations of what a woman should look like. Today I am not suicidal and I do not self harm. Today I am happy living as a young beautiful bearded woman. I have realized that this body is mine, I own it, I do not have any other body to live in so I may as well love it unconditionally.”
Kaur is now a full-time body positivity and anti-bullying activist, as well as a life coach, and is campaigning for the modelling industry to change its beauty ideals.
She holds a Guinness World Records as the youngest woman in the world to have a full beard. Her record citation read:
“Now with a beard measuring as long as six inches in places, she overcame years of bullying to take ownership of her appearance and achieve this record title at the age of 24 years 282 days.”
